Is The Food Crisis Rubbish?
I am going to have to go ahead and disagree with my good friend Venture Opportunist, I do not believe that the food crisis is rubbish, I believe it is real and something that we have to address at a global level. The increase in the current food prices is not based entirely on speculation, speculation may bring the price above where it should be, but there IS a very real shortage of food. If you don't believe this, then go ask the farmers in Thailand that have to guard their crops with loaded shotguns at night. We can see several well-established trends that are working together to bring us to the current food situation. I believe TreeHugger.com says it best in their article Food Shortages Drive Global Prices to Record Highs
Weekly Dividend Blog Highlights
It is Thursday again, so I'm going to give you a few articles from other blogs that I enjoyed reading this past week.
The Dividend Guy provides us with his weekly dividend stock; June 4 - Dividend Stock Wednesday: Kimberly-Clark Corp (KMB-N).
The Dividend Guy let us know about his Top 3 Dividend Investing Books, I think I might take his advice and read a couple of them. The Top 3 Dividend Investing Books.
Dividend Stock Analysis: Enbridge Inc. (TSE: ENB)
Seeing how I'm sure a lot of our readers (if not all) have been getting hit pretty hard at the gas pumps the last little while (and it looks like for a long time in the future). I figure we should all try and hedge against the pain a little bit by investing in some of the oil companies out there. So over the next few weeks, I'll be trying to highlight some of the stocks and income trusts out there that can help us accomplish this. First up we have Enbridge Inc. (TSE: ENB) lets see how it fairs as a dividend based investment.

The Stochastic Oscillator (STOCH)
The Stochastic Oscillator has been around since the late 1950s and was created by George C. Lane and is a momentum indicator. The stochastic oscillator uses three values in its calculation, the days High, Low and Close price. If the days close is closer to the periods high over the set period then the stock is going to show that there is buying pressure, and it will show that there is selling pressure if the days close is closer to the periods low over the set period.
The Stochastic Oscillator consists of two lines, the %K and the %D, the %K point is plotted by using the following calculation
%K = 100 * ((Recent Close - Lowest Low) / (Highest High - Lowest Low))
Highest High = the highest point the price reached over the set period of days.
Lowest Low = the lowest point the price reached over the set period of days.
Weekly Dividend Blog Highlights
I am going to start a new feature here called the "Weekly Dividend Blog Highlights", this is where I will highlight any interesting articles that I have read from other dividend based bloggers. Some weeks there might be a lot, other weeks there might be very little, but I will try to have some highlights for you to enjoy every Thursday.
Canadian Business - The Investor 500 Issue
I have a subscription to the Canadian Business magazine, and recently they released their special issue "The Investor 500". I have not had time to fully read through this issue yet, but what I have read I have been very pleased with. I recommend anyone that follows the Canadian markets should go out and pick themselves up a copy of this special issue. I have found a couple stocks that I did not think to look further into before, so I am excited to get started on some analysis of these stocks. A couple examples are Baytex Energy Trust (TSE: BTE.UN), Quadra Mining Ltd (TSE: QUA), EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc. (TSE: EXF) and many more.
Full Disclosure: I do NOT own any of the companies mentioned in this post, as well, I am NOT affiliated with Canadian Business in any way, apart from having a subscription to their magazine.
